YKC Agility at Crufts 2023

Quarry House Vet's Dogs at Crufts 2023

We are very proud of our principal vet’s dogs Betty and Monty who had a wonderful time competing in the YKC agility competitions at Crufts 2023 with their handler Thomas.

How it all started...

Our principal vet’s partner Debbie put a post out on Facebook to see if there was a child who would like to learn dog agility handling with Monty. A friend of Thomas’ mum saw the post and got in contact. Thomas was only 8 years old at the time and got on brilliantly with Monty.

Thomas and Monty trained regularly and started competing at competitions.

As Thomas’ handling was improving tremendously, Debbie was keen to see if Betty (who is highly skilled at agility and much quicker than Monty) would be a good match for Thomas too. Needless to say they were!

Thomas and Debbie started to share the handling of Betty at competitions whilst Thomas continued to run Monty alongside our principal vet Marcus.

Monty, Betty and Thomas became regulars at agility competitions. They collected enough wins and points from shows such as the Kennel Club International Festival to make it through to Crufts 2023.

Crufts 2023

Thomas at now 10 years old earned his place completing with Betty and Monty in the Young Kennel Club Agility Competitions at Crufts.

On the Saturday, Thomas and Betty competed in both the agility and jumping competitions for Thomas’ age group. After coming 2nd in both competitions they made it though to the main arena to compete in the YKC U18’s Agility Competition. This was shown on the TV.  They did very well with a fantastic clear run.

Sunday saw Monty’s turn to shine. Thomas and Monty competed in the YKC Agility Pairs Competition. Monty is a real character and enjoys everyone’s attention therefore he sometimes forgets to focus on the course! Despite Monty stopping to pose for photos they had a wonderful time and finished with a clear round.

Betty

At 6 years old Betty has beaten all odds to be here. She has unfortunately suffered from being run over, being poisoned, having meningitis and she also has Addison’s disease.

However, you can’t keep this border terrier down as you can see below…

Monty

Monty is Betty’s dad. He is 7 years old and a very cheeky happy chap.

Monty has just started training with Max (aged 9) who is Thomas’ younger brother. Both Thomas and Max run Monty at agility competitions therefore Monty likes having a nap on his days off!!
