Here are the best ways to keep your pet's oral health in tip top condition...
Brush your pet’s teeth
Brushing your pet’s teeth a few times a week is an effective way to prevent plaque and tartar from building up. Only ever use pet safe toothbrushes and toothpaste, human toothpaste can be toxic to animals.
Diet
Feeding your pet dry food as part of their meal can help remove plaque from their teeth as they chew. There are also specially formulated dental pet foods available. Our vets can advise you if these are suitable for your pets. However, this is not as effective as brushing their teeth.
Dental Chews, Treats and Toys
There are many chews and treats available that are designed to help clean your pets teeth as an extra to brushing. Just remember to include these in their daily food allowance and they shouldn’t make up more than 10% of their total allowance. Make sure your pet is always supervised when having chews, treats and toys.
Regular Check Ups
Your pet should have a dental check up with us as these are crucial for identifying any issues early on. They will receive this at their annual vaccination and certain consultations. However, if you can have concerns about your pet’s dental health or need advice on the best dental care routine, don’t hesitate to contact us. Our team is here to help.
Water Additives / Mouthwash
There are pet safe water additives, mouthwashes and antibacterial gels available that may help to reduce plaque and freshen your pet’s breath. Our vets can recommend which are suitable for your pets. Never use human products. Any products should be used to support your pet’s oral hygiene routine alongside brushing.
