It’s Day 5 of Rabbit Awareness Week
Today we are covering a critical health warning: when a rabbit stops eating, it is a medical emergency. 🚨🐰
Rabbits have incredibly unique, delicate digestive systems that must stay in constant motion. Because they are prey animals, they instinctively hide their pain, meaning subtle changes in their appetite are often the very first warning sign of a major problem.
Keep your eyes peeled for the subtle warning signs to catch issues before they escalate:
⚠️ Warning Signs to Track Daily
- Appetite Shifts: Leaving behind favorite treats, eating slower, or refusing food entirely for more than 6–12 hours.
- Dropping Changes: Poops that are suddenly much smaller than usual, misshapen, strung together with hair, or a complete lack of droppings.
- Behavioural Clues: Sitting hunched up in a corner, grinding their teeth loudly (a sign of severe pain), or hiding away from you.
🩺 What a Sudden Loss of Appetite Could Mean:
- GI Stasis (Gut Stasis): A silent, life-threatening condition where the muscular waves of the digestive tract slow down or stop completely, causing painful bloating.
- Dental Disease: Overgrown teeth or sharp molar spurs that cut into their tongue or cheeks, making chewing physically painful.
- Extreme Stress: Sudden environmental changes, loud noises, or losing a bonded companion can cause a rabbit to go off their food.
Prevention, proper high-fibre nutrition, and rapid action save lives. Never wait it out—if your rabbit isn’t eating, contact your us immediately! 🏥✨
