Diet
Getting the right balance of diet for your guinea pigs is so important but it doesn’t have to be complicated.
Guinea pigs are herbivores which means they are entirely vegetarian and require a diet that is high in fibre. As fibre keeps their digestive systems healthy and their gut moving, it is important to feed them good quality hay and lots of it.
However, you should always keep an eye on their weight to ensure they aren’t getting overweight. It’s also important to make sure they are eating and if you have any concerns, seek guidance from your vet.
What should they eat?
♥ Good Quality Hay ♥ Fresh Greens ♥ Fresh Water ♥ Nuggets ♥ Nature Snacks ♥
This should provide them with the correct balance of fibre, vitamins and minerals.
85-90% of their diet should be good quality, dust extracted feeding hay and a handful of safe fresh greens, such as kale, cabbage, pak choi and romaine lettuce. Fresh clean water should always be available to them. A small portion of nuggets can be mixed in with their hay for them to forage. Guinea pig treats should be given as just that, an occasional treat.
N.B. Your guinea pigs can eat lots of different fruits and vegetables in small amounts. Please seek further advice if you are unsure.
